As 2008 begins there are many of you out there making resolutions to improve your lives in the new year. Traditionally, the beginning of a new year represents an opportunity for a fresh start, to take control and find direction, and become more of the person you would like to be. For some, this can be a very exciting time, while for others it can be somewhat daunting - can you do it? How easy will it be? There are also many more who no longer bother with resolutions, having become disheartened by past failed attempts.
If you have previously failed in new years resolutions, do you know why? What could you do differently this time to get a better result? If you really want to make that change this year, here are some powerful tips to tip the odds in your favour:
Set positive goals: When setting up your desired outcome, make sure it is something you are moving towards and not something you are moving away from - make it positive. For example, rather than 'giving up smoking' think instead of becoming stronger and healthier andfeeling better and more in control.
Make your goals vivid and powerful: This is a trick that top athletes use to win medals and break records - taking time out to fantasise about your goals. Go somewhere quiet, close your eyes and imagine yourself achieving your goal fully. Make this as vivid as possible - see, hear, feel, taste and smell it. The more vivid you can make this, and the more you reinforce it each day, the more it will act as a powerful magnet in your mind, pulling you toward success. This works - ask top athletes!
Talk the talk: Pay attention to what you say, both out loud and in your head, and make sure it is useful in helping you to achieve your goal. While your mind directs what you say, what you say also directs your mind. So, for example, if you say to yourself 'this is terrible, I really want a donut', you are focussing your mind into the problem, and amplifying it. Now if you say 'this could be better, what could I do to just feel good and make the right choice right now?' you focus your mind into the solution. Try this out and see how much better it feels.
Step outside the moment: If you find yourself being drawn back towards how you were, STOP! In your mind just step outside of the moment and ask yourself 'what would be a good choice for me right now?' Then get in touch with your vivid goal and remember how good it is going to feel when you have fully achieved it.
Feedback over failure: If you slip back into your old ways at any point, simply learn from it and move on. What happened? And what will you do differently next time to ensure you keep right on track?
The above tools, while simple, will help you develop focus through awareness and imagination. With the right focus, you will find that you start to make your changes easily, and without having to rely on will power.
